While the United States government continues to march vaping products relentlessly toward the regulatory cliffs of insanity, enacting what many see as a prohibition era response to what could have been a huge boon to public health, something quite different is going on in sunny old England.
Public Health England has embraced vaping for all the right reasons.
Yes, that's an actual Tweet from Public Health England, the official governmental public health agency!
The photos are stills from a remarkable video created by the agency to visually highlight the drastically reduced danger to health posed by moving from smoking cigarettes to e-cigarettes. This video is a must watch and a breath of fresh air compared to the hysterical, frequently unscientific, reactionary response to vaping we've seen here in the United States. It is absolutely worth two minutes of your time:
In the U.K., some pharmacies and drug stores are now displaying e-cigs and vaping products in the healthcare aisle:
And it was just announced that two National Healthcare Service hospitals have converted their smoking areas to vaping areas and opened vape shops inside the hospitals in order to encourage smokers to make the switch!
"Giving up smoking saves you money and saves your health," said Dr. David Carruthers, medical director for the trust that manages the hospitals.
The U.K. government is also actively letting citizens know that vaping is around 95% less harmful than smoking cigarettes.
The U.K. government is responding to vaping the way so many of us ex-smokers so naively believed our own government would respond. We were amazed, thrilled, ecstatic when we finally found a way to switch away from combustible cigarettes! Some of us started vape businesses, overjoyed and eager to share this remarkable product with other smokers, to free them from their own chains. We expected vaping to be embraced by public health agencies eager to get behind anything that could possibly help get people away from cigarettes--a product that kills 50% of long term users. We assumed vaping would be seen as the incredible gift to the smokers of the world that we saw it to be.
How wrong we were.
